This is especially great for beginners. It definitely helped that I had a base level of knowledge, but found that this booked continued zralg add more to my understanding. Zraly seems to be coming from the attitude that there is a correct and an incorrect in understanding wine, a rigidity that I do not personally value. I dunno, I still think wine’s windowss bullshit and hype but if you’re into maps and lists and trivia about your beverage, this book has all that and more. Still, if you want to learn wines this is a great place to start. This is another book I read for my wine class. Such suggestions always go out of date and thus the value offer by the book diminish as time zrayl on.
Great to see a new edition of his book out again. You get key information about the regions and the wines plus suggested producers, food pairings, comparative tasting prompts and a lot more. I have both a hard copy version, and a digital. For someone with a little wine knowledge going in, it is easy to read through this one chapter at a time and then refer back to it later as a reference book. However, I thought it was packed with stuff I never knew even after taking a wine class last semester. And this is a simple wine book. I find myself reading this just for fun. A comprehensive book that walks you through various wine-making areas in eight “classes.
I just did some skimming and still picked up a few things. For example, in the section on Australia, the main white grape varieties have Merlot listed but the section on Aussie reds has Semillon. Zraly was instrumental in getting the wine beat going here in the United States through his work at the Windows on the World restaurant in New York and his high-impact teaching at the Windows on the World Wine School.
Set up a giveaway. It mixes litlle blurbs of interest in the margins that add to an overall enjoyment of the book. This book might work well for a group of people who used it as a text book for their own wine course, but as an at home read I found it difficult to follow. Made every other wine book I bought obsolete. I will need more in-depth books to get to the next level but, this is an excellent starting point to lay a broad foundation of knowledge before diving into very specialized topics.
A Parody in a Cookbook by F. Wjndows, it gave me a better understanding of the reason behind wine enthusiasts everywhere. A great overview with references to additional books for many types of wine if you want more in-depth knowledge.
