I found the story relevant and appropriate to Christianity today. Nichols makes everyone believe that he is in the house with several followers, and he will kill them if the police approach. Spiritual band-aids and need to PTL praise the Lord!
The story does deal with the damage dogma can do when applied judgmentally. HERE is my all-time favorite Peretti novel! Peretti later spent time studying English, screen writing and film at UCLA and then assisted his father in pastoring a small Assembly of God church. I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt, and the town and I are sick of it. The Oath was awarded the Gold Medallion Award for best fiction.

This book was very similar to Silas Marner in that the main character suffers a tragedy and stops trusting God. Every time I read this book, I get something new out of it! Nevertheless, if you’re interested in this genre, this book is well worth the time. As I say it is definitely a religious story about a town which appears to have been visited by Jesus and how the town react and behave.
Although I fully appreciate it will not be to everyone’s taste.
