Certainly a non-traditional Christmas story, very short in presentation, a little bit of a gem as well; no-nonsense in the telling as is Auggie Wren, a colorful character from whom the author received the story with the assurance that “every word is true.

At only 48 pages, this is a quick enough read, but the story which includes a lost wallet, a shoplifter and a blind grandmother, well, that will stay with you longer.

I think the cover and the size tricked me into thinking it was going to be some charming story for kids. From this brief Christmas tale, the brilliant film Smoke derives, and if you have not seen that beautiful masterpiece of drama and comedy, I beg you to seek it out as soon as possible.

Next we would walk over to The Old Julian Bookstore. I couldn’t be sure, but the look in ucento eyes at that moment was so mysterious, so fraught with the glow of some inner delight, that it suddenly occurred to me that he had made the whole thing up. Then he begins to panic. It is Paul Auster and I am a big fan, so I don’t know if I somehow of forced my mind to like this, but I thought it was actually pretty good, even though it is not completely Auster-esque.

I was about to ask him if he’d been putting me on, but then i realized het would never tell.

Dec 21, Pam rated it liked it Shelves: So now I’ve re-watched Smoke, watched Blue in the Face don’t think I’d seen it beforeand now I’ve read the short story. A cigar store, a robbery, a blind old woman on Christmas. Very random short story for Christmas, and most likely my choice to read it in mid-April added to the weirdness. My husband remarked upon it, mentioning how they were having Christmas in July.

I really didn’t like the illustrations as part Auggie Wren. I love this little book. Open Preview See a Problem? No, no, too expensive, I have three umbrellas at home, half a mile away.

The blind auggir received what she needed because she wanted it, to feel loved, and respected, and appreciated and not forgotten. This couldn’t be more perfect.

Nicely illustrated as well. Aug 04, Mariam Romanadze rated it it was amazing. I listened to the audio version read by the author available at NPR’s web auggis.
