On the surface, they were nothing but style, and the style was extremely rigorous to boot, but they seemed almost transparent and purely content driven. For sake of ridiculous comparisons I have to say that it reads almost as a postmodern poem that rejects capitalization thereby making every capital letter that much more important in the end.
The food was great. George gets involved with a middle-aged French man named Philippe, and through that connection travels down a dark road of dangerous, filthy sex that almost gets him killed in the basement of some suburban home. Loved a lot of his other works but this was awful. Repression has an ugly face, forcing urges into the psyche. He’s got a lot of baggage, with an accidental slaying of a boy who loved him, a sexually abusive relationship with his 13 year-old brother, and an overpowering rage when he fucks other men.
You don’t notice how disturbing it should be because none of the characters seem to notice.
